Bar Manager
The Bar Manager plans, directs, and oversees all bar operations to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for Lodge members and their guests. Under the direction of the House Committee and Club Manager, this role supervises bartenders, manages staffing and scheduling, oversees inventory and costs, ensures compliance with policies and applicable laws, and supports recruitment and performance management. The Bar Manager maintains service standards, resolves guest concerns diplomatically, ensures proper documentation and certifications, and regularly communicates with the House Committee to support smooth, safe, and efficient bar operations.
SUPERVISION GIVEN/EXERCISED:
Supervision Received: Under the direction of the House Committee and Club Manager
Supervision Exercised: This position provides day-to-day supervision for bartenders. Advise the House Committee on performance management and recruitment needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Responsible for overall operations of bar services and consistent adherence to policies set by the House Committee. For example, ensuring bartenders ask every Elk for their membership card before serving the first drink.
- Work with the House Committee to manage recruitment and evaluation of bar staff. Final hiring and discipline decisions are at the discretion of the House Committee; however, the bar manager is expected to participate in the decision-making process.
- Ensure incidents are properly documented by bar staff in accordance with lodge policies.
- Responsible for maintenance and control of sufficient stock on hand for efficient service, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, stemware, and other supplies, consistent with Lodge calendar of events and/or seasons.
- Responsible for monitoring bar costs and keeping them within the provided budget, including the cost of goods, supplies, equipment maintenance, and new equipment needs.
- Schedule staff as needed for proper coverage, being as equitable as possible to all bartenders, consistent with Lodge calendar of events and/or seasons.
- Ensure staff are taking appropriate breaks in accordance with California labor law.
- Ensure staff has all required certifications including RBS, Food Handlers, and sexual harassment on file.
- Respond timely to the needs of guests in an effective and diplomatic manner pursuant to Lodge guidelines/standards, including diffusing and resolving disputes and completing incident reports when needed.
- Prepare reports, attend, and participate effectively in House and Board meetings.
- Regularly communicate with the House Committee to maintain smooth operation for the Lodge.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant legislation regarding the service of alcohol and licensing.
- Cover shifts as needed for unexpected absences of Bartenders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
- At least three years of experience working in the bar or restaurant industry, directly serving customers and handling money.
- At least one year of experience as a bartender
- Preferred one year of experience with team leadership.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
- Must be 21 or older
- External candidates may not be an Elk member or spouse
CERTIFICATION:
- State of California required R.B.S training
- Food Handlers License
HOURS AND COMPENSATION:
20 hours/week are expected, primarily covering regular bartender duties. This position regularly requires evening and weekend hours, and split shifts may be required to ensure proper break coverage for staff. All hours for this position will be compensated for at the employee’s hourly rate including time bartending and time performing managerial duties.
Hourly rates for this position range from $20-$25 and an exact rate will be determined at the time of hiring based on experience and qualifications.
